Five Monroe County Teams Reach 5-0; Huron Stuns Riverview in Week 5

St. Mary Catholic Central, Jefferson, Ida, Bedford and Gibraltar Carlson all stayed perfect Friday night, while New Boston Huron knocked off Riverview 64-56.

Five undefeated teams in the Monroe County Region remained that way on Friday, Sept. 25. St. Mary Catholic Central, Jefferson, Ida, Bedford and Gibraltar Carlson all improved to 5-0, though Jefferson and SMCC needed late drama to get there. New Boston Huron delivered arguably the most surprising result of the night by beating Huron League heavyweight Riverview in a shootout.

Jefferson escaped with a 28-26 home win over Flat Rock after falling behind 26-20 with 4:32 to play. The Bears answered with a 60-yard drive, and Grady Brooks tied it on a 9-yard touchdown run with 1:07 left before Drake Jones ran in the two-point conversion for the final margin. Flat Rock reached the Jefferson 30 on its last possession, but Brayden Birkmier's second interception of the game ended the threat. Jefferson coach Rob Beaudrie said the team faced adversity but stepped up and that he was proud of the kids. Flat Rock's Joel Scully went 18-for-26 for 332 yards with scoring throws of 41 yards to Braylen Hoover, 65 to Jordan Godfrey, 55 to David Riddle and 17 to Alex Beaudrie.

SMCC stayed unbeaten with a 26-13 win at winless Airport that was in doubt until late. Cole Reinhardt's 18-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left in the third quarter proved decisive, and Cameron Cousino added a late interception. Airport had led 13-9 behind a 60-yard touchdown pass from Colton Alston to Mason Stoneburner and CJ Lukosavich's 8-yard scoring run. Airport coach Derek Anderson credited strong defensive play from Emmett Kruise, Colton Alston, Cash Nye and Roman Day.

Bedland and Gibraltar Carlson had easier nights. Bedford blanked Ann Arbor Skyline 49-0 in Temperance, scoring on just 28 offensive plays and leading 35-0 at the break. Jaxson Lestock returned the opening kickoff to the 1, Masyn Moran ran for three touchdowns, Luke Whetstone went 7-for-8 for 92 yards and two scores with another on the ground, and Eli Koontz added the final touchdown. Bedford coach Dave Mifsud said his team jumped right on Skyline and the defense shut them down from the start. Carlson beat Taylor 48-22 behind three Brennan Hudson touchdowns and a 28-point first quarter. Grayson Malec took a kickoff back 97 yards and caught one of Austyn Lawrence's two touchdown passes, with Myle Hampton and Jordan Palmore also scoring in a game coach Jason Gendron described as an early lead built on contributions from many players.

Ida won a matchup of unbeatens 41-20 at Adrian Madison despite missing its leading rusher and without throwing a single pass. Grant Pfeiffer carried 27 times for 223 yards and two touchdowns, Carson Weeman scored three times and Ryan Ashcraft added a touchdown on an 88-yard night. Defensively, Ben Noland made 9 tackles with an interception, Myles Wolkins picked off a pass, Cade Uhl had 7 tackles and Nick Miller 6.

New Boston Huron's 64-56 win at Riverview was the Chiefs' first over the Pirates since 2016 and moved them to 4-1 against a 3-2 opponent. Cash Moczydlowsky threw for 162 yards on 9-of-13 passing with four touchdowns, three of them in the opening quarter to Cayden Kilby (19 and 30 yards) and Colton Ison (59 yards). Ison caught a fourth TD in the third quarter and then threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to Owen DeLano in the fourth. Jamil Brown scored three times, two on the ground plus a 58-yard fumble return, finishing with a team-best 175 yards on 17 carries.

Elsewhere, Monroe lost 42-6 at Saline while playing without starting quarterback Dalen Cosby, who injured a knee the previous week. Torran Simmons scored the 1-4 Trojans' only points on a 17-yard fourth-quarter run, and Timothy Richards led them with 51 rushing yards. Summerfield fell 32-15 to Powers North Central despite a 69-yard touchdown pass from Trent Miller to Hudson Crots and a 4-yard scoring run by Miller; Crots caught 4 passes for 112 yards and intercepted a pass, Eli Nevel made 15 tackles and Brendan Pease 12. Hudson routed Dundee 48-3, dropping the Vikings to 0-5, with coach Jason Carpenter saying Hudson was bigger, faster and stronger and dominated both lines. Grosse Ile got its first win 40-21 over Milan, which has lost four in a row since opening the season with a victory; Cam Dessellier accounted for all three Milan touchdowns, two rushing and one passing.
