Alysa Liu, the American figure skater who won two gold medals at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, is featured in a new British Vogue photoshoot as she continues her break from competition.
Liu announced over the summer that she would sit out the current season. In her statement, she said she wanted to challenge herself in new ways so her artistry and skating could evolve, and that she planned to take time to recalibrate before returning. She also said she would be cheering on her teammates in the meantime.
Speaking to British Vogue, Liu explained her thinking behind the hiatus. "It's important to do things on my own terms, because for so long I didn't," she said, adding that she needs creative control of her projects or she would rather not do them at all.
She compared photoshoots to skating programs, saying both need to tell a story. "It's art," Liu said. "I feel like when I'm being heard, I can put my all into it because I'm more comfortable."
