The Carolina Panthers are set to host veteran running back Austin Ekeler for a visit on Wednesday, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. The move comes as the team deals with another setback at the position.
Second-year running back Jonathon Brooks, a 2024 second-round pick, reportedly suffered a groin injury that is expected to require surgery. Ekeler would give the Panthers added depth in the backfield while Brooks is unavailable.
Ekeler, 31, is recovering from a significant injury of his own. He tore his Achilles tendon last season while playing for the Washington Commanders, an injury that occurred in his second game of the campaign.
Before the injury, Ekeler had rushed for 43 yards on 14 carries and caught five passes for 38 yards that season. He spent two years in Washington after playing his first seven NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers.
With the Chargers, Ekeler led the NFL in touchdowns from scrimmage in both 2021 and 2022, scoring 20 and 18 times respectively. Across 117 career games, he has totaled 4,355 rushing yards and 39 rushing touchdowns, plus 440 receptions for 3,884 yards and 30 receiving scores.
