Red Bull retains Hadjar alongside Verstappen for 2027 F1 season

Isack Hadjar has signed a contract extension with Red Bull, keeping him as Max Verstappen's teammate for a second season and returning from injury in Azerbaijan.
Red Bull announced Wednesday that Isack Hadjar's contract has been extended, securing him as Max Verstappen's teammate for the 2027 Formula 1 season. Verstappen signed his own extension, running through 2030, last month.
Hadjar has missed the last three races with a wrist injury but will return to competition at this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the Baku City Circuit, with Red Bull confirming his participation Tuesday. Liam Lawson filled in for the Dutch, Italian and Spanish Grands Prix, while Yuki Tsunoda came back to cover Lawson's seat at Racing Bulls.
Team principal Laurent Mekies said the period since the injury had been difficult for Hadjar but that the extension reflected the team's belief in him. He praised the French driver as superb on and off the track since joining from Racing Bulls after a strong 2025 rookie campaign, calling the decision an easy one.
Hadjar sits eighth in the standings despite the layoff, with top-six finishes in his last seven outings. The deal means Verstappen keeps the same teammate for consecutive seasons for the first time since Sergio Perez was dropped at the end of 2024.
In a statement, Red Bull thanked Lawson for his professionalism and impressive performances while substituting and wished him well on his return to Racing Bulls.
