Giants QB Jaxson Dart out extended period, missing Saints matchup

An MRI revealed more extensive knee damage than initially diagnosed, sidelining the Giants quarterback and scrapping his awaited meeting with Tyler Shough.

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart will be sidelined for an extended period after further testing revealed more significant knee damage than first believed, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.

Dart was hurt in Monday night's loss to the Los Angeles Rams, caught between multiple Rams defenders. The initial diagnosis was an MCL sprain, but an MRI showed additional damage that could result in a stint on season-ending injured reserve.

The injury means Dart will not play when the New Orleans Saints visit the Giants in Week 6, postponing a matchup with Saints quarterback Tyler Shough. The two have been linked since the draft, when New York traded up to No. 25 to take Dart and New Orleans selected Shough at No. 40. They have never faced each other as starters.

Jameis Winston, who signed a two-year contract extension with the Giants in September, is expected to start in Dart's place. Jake Haener, a 2023 Saints draft pick, is on the Giants' practice squad as a backup option.
