Liverpool's under-21 side claimed a bonus point with a 7-6 penalty shootout win over Rochdale in the Jersey Mike's Trophy at the Crown Oil Arena on Tuesday, after a dramatic finish to the contest.
The visitors were reduced to ten men when Mor Talla Ndiaye was sent off, and Devante Rodney put Rochdale ahead. Will Wright leveled shortly before halftime with a remarkable individual effort, picking the ball up on the left wing just inside the Rochdale half, driving to the edge of the box, beating Edward Francis, and curling a finish past Sam Waller.
Two goals from Ian Henderson appeared to have decided the game for the hosts, but late strikes from Ben Trueman and Josh Sonni-Lambie in stoppage time drew Liverpool level and forced a shootout, which Rob Page's side won 7-6.
Wright, 18, has yet to make a competitive first-team appearance for Liverpool but featured in preseason with the senior squad. He has spoken during the summer about his ambition to become the club's starting center-forward.
