Christian Brothers Academy Rolls Past Shenendehowa 61-14 in Class AA Football

The state's fourth-ranked Brothers scored 54 first-half points, got a touchdown from lineman George Karame, and moved to 4-0 ahead of an Oct. 2 home date with Colonie.

Christian Brothers Academy stayed perfect on the season with a 61-14 road win over Shenendehowa in Class AA football on Friday night at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park. The Brothers, ranked No. 4 in the state, scored 54 points before halftime and improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Class AA.

The unusual highlight of the night came from the trenches. George Karame, a 6-foot-1, 285-pound senior two-way lineman and defensive tackle, caught an interception in the end zone late in the second quarter. Shenendehowa quarterback Jack Clawson, trying to escape a sack in his own end zone, threw the ball forward only a few yards, where Karame was waiting. He described it afterward as the greatest feeling of his life, crediting teammate Myles Johnson for nearly bringing down Clawson for a safety on the play.

Karame's teammates embraced the moment. Senior running back and linebacker Tommy Toher said Karame does the dirty work and deserved the spotlight. Karame, who has taken on starting offensive line duties this season in addition to his defensive role, also praised line coach Jim Canfield as the best in Section 2.

The blowout was comprehensive on both sides of the ball. CBA piled up 324 offensive yards in the first half alone and held Shenendehowa to minus-1 rushing yards over the opening 24 minutes. The Brothers also blocked two punts, one of which Alex Rivera recovered in the end zone for a touchdown and the other of which set the offense up at the Shenendehowa 1-yard line.

Toher opened the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run, and Michael Berben's blocked punt led to Rivera's score for a 13-0 lead. CBA pushed the advantage to 27-0 before Shenendehowa answered with a 69-yard touchdown pass from Clawson to Elijah Woodrow. It was 54-7 by halftime. Toher finished with nine carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

The 61-point output marked the third time this season the Brothers have topped 60 points. Their only close call came in Week 2, a 21-14 win over Saratoga Springs, and players said that game has served as motivation and a teaching tool. Karame said the team learned what it needed to fix and believes it can score 60 on anyone in the section, while Toher said the Saratoga result continues to drive them each week.

CBA coach Bobby Burns said he intends for Karame to play both ways for entire games, though lopsided first halves like Friday's may spare him that workload. Burns credited a focused week of practice and said the defense was strong against the run and special teams came through with the two punt blocks, adding that if the team prepares and plays to its capability it can do special things.

Both teams are back in action Oct. 2. The Brothers host Colonie, while Shenendehowa faces Niskayuna in a game with significance for both programs. Fans looking to catch the Brothers next can find them on their home field for that Week 5 matchup.
